April 2021
When I retired in 2008, after 35 years working for the S.A. Education Department, I joined a Writing group and then an Art group.
I began my Art ‘journey’ with pastels in 2010, moved to acrylics about two years later, and joined Arts North in January 2021. I wanted to try oils and watercolours and I knew that there were ‘masters’ of these mediums at Arts North who would be willing to give me some painting ‘tips. Hans patiently attempted to guide me through the basics of oil painting, but it soon became evident that oils were not for me! Gerhard is similarly sharing his wisdom about watercolours and I’m trying hard to follow his advice. Only time will tell if I can master this medium. It is quite daunting to be surrounded by so many outstanding artists on the Thursday morning sessions and I can only aspire to one day reach their standards.
I was recently persuaded to enter a painting in the Port Adelaide Community Arts Centre exhibition and was surprised and delighted that my painting of 'Zeus' – the husky, was ‘runner up’ in the people’s choice’ vote section. My main focus for several years has been on pet portraits and I have completed commissions for dogs, cats and horse portraits over that time. My ambition is to widen my horizons and one day produce a really good landscape!
