Mixed Media

(First) Wednesday of the Month 9.30am - 12.30pm
Next -  Wed 2 Jul

(Make creative art with what might be to hand)

Mixed Media meets now on Wednesday mornings on the first Wednesday of most months.  We have a lot of fun, making art that we enjoy, experimenting with different techniques and media. Our aim is not to make polished exhibition pieces (although this has happened) but to enjoy each other's company and try out our ideas in a safe and creative environment.
We would like our group to grow.

Ideas we have looked at include:
Making our own texture paste from PVA glue and talcum powder and exploring how we could use it in our artwork
Collage ~ using all kinds of materials
Mono printing with a Geli plate ~ great for collage and useful for backgrounds
Textures using tissue paper
Mark making ~ lots ~ including drawing with ink on a long stick
Mixed Media using water colour with oil pastel, soft pastels and ink or any combination
Journaling and sketch booking
We often work from a still life or from our imagination
And there's more!

(Cost is $5/session - studio fee)

Jun 25 ..  and Funky Tree is finished.  Can you still see the unloved landscape (last photo Oct 24)?

Funky Tree is currently on the wall in Judd House.  Pop in and see us on
the first Wednesday morning of the month, we would love you to join us.

Where do the months go?
Anyhow, yes, we have been getting together as scheduled - and doing our thing - and enjoying the journey.  The floral arrangement below was done by Don (watercolour/pen/pastel) and was considered to be 'a dead loss' until it was "sort of saved" by putting a white mat over it.  Oh, and Don did finish his 'pergola and vine'.

And, psst, Meredith's 'funky tree' is taking on a life of its own!  (Won't include a 'spoiler' photo here - Meredith will have to be the one to do that when she is 'finished'!)

Turning an unloved landscape into a funky tree, negative painting with white Gesso . A good beginning, a lot more work to do yet ...

... and then, by way of contrast, Ruby (14yo?), while keeping her Mum company, produced two works; the 'Purple Portrait' in particular showing a great grasp of composition - and a bunch of interest!  Thanks Ruby!
Lovely.

Jul 24

(How did it get to be July already?)
A bunch of fun at Mixed Media this morning - from left to right: Patricia painting an acrylic landscape over a water-damaged printed canvas (reserving a couple of remnant elements, esp upper right corner); Meredith put together some of her gelliplate monoprints, then cut shapes which she arranged and collaged as a floral array; and Don took a sketch of a domestic pergola area and provided it with a rough under-painting in preparation to commence a torn-paper collage on that subject next month.  All in all, a success!  And fun!
Nov 23

We had a lot of fun at Mixed Media, monoprinting with Gelliplate. We enjoyed learning a new technique and discussing how we could make use of
the prints.

Don had already used his, incorporating it into a larger art piece featuring his own poetry.

July 23 - a simple magazine 'tear-out' and 'juxtapose' can be more engaging than you might have thought.
Jun '23

Another successful morning at Mixed Media.

Patricia worked "out of her comfort zone", abstracting a background for a classic portrait.

Meredith's "Tomatoes" emerged from a previous piece, some elements of which she liked, but was not happy with the design.  The piece was cut up and reconstructed into a more pleasing design. She used wax crayon, watercolours, oil pastels and her favourite "ink and stick"

Picture

A bit like Meredith, Don decided to trot out a couple of old pieces and, with combined elements, he produced an A2 collage which he (we) titled 'The Edge of Time'.
Much fun!

Please join us next month, for a fun morning

Pen n Wash - hardly novel, but around Arts North, becoming 'all the go'.

June '22

Here is a contribution from, yes, June!

A very engaging (and detailed) rendition of a pot of 'happy' plants.
12 Apr

We had a very interesting day at Mixed Media today - lots of inspirational discussion about art design, the importance of light and shadow, and most important of all, not to be too precious about the outcomes of the artwork, but to relax and enjoy.
Picture'Tulips'

Today, Meredith finished the piece she started at  last month's session.  A discarded canvas of a collage was painted with black gesso, leaving behind the sections of collage which she liked. She then glued down pieces of torn newspaper keeping in mind a "bunch shape".  The background was painted in, using mainly transparent acrylics and followed up
with the tulip shapes painted - with semi, or opaque acrylics.

The next session is Tuesday May 3, we would love to see you.

Another enjoyable afternoon at Mixed Media last Tuesday.  I took in my painting "Wattle" which was begun last wattle season, about a year ago.  It is still a work in progress.  I have used paint, wax crayon, oil pastel and now added collage with tissue paper to the mix.
Wonder what will be added next session - which is Tuesday October 5.

Love you to join us.

Tomatoes
are in season!

This afternoon we had fun with mixed media of all kinds, paint, crayon, oil pastel, ink and charcoal to celebrate the season.

Don has given himself a huge challenge, and is embarking on a new collage; this time trying out a technique he has not used before.

It would be lovely to see you at our next session which is Tuesday 6 April 21.

'The Light of Day' - Don Meyer - Mixed/Collage - 60x90cm
4 May20.  First Multi Media (first Arts North website) update since the onset of corona virus.  This now-just-completed 'torn-paper' collage takes its title 'The Light of Day' not from any allusion to Corona 'isolation/emergence', but actually because with a 3 to 4 months 'gestation', Don Meyer had started to think that the work would never get finished.  One (+) for CV?

Mixed Media met today (Mar20) and had an enjoyable session. We had fun experimenting with the Arts North newly-aquired inks, and discovered yes one drop is enough!
We all worked on our own projects, but as always enjoy the company and gained inpiration and ideas from one another.

Sue worked on a portrait (her love) with watercolour and pastel; Sophie used an unfamiliar found backing board; Gem enhanced her lifedrawings from Saturday's session with bold explosive colour; Don's patiently executed collage is progressing beautifully and Meredith continued a still life of flowers with collage and acrylic paint.

"HAPPY SECOND BIRTHDAY, MIXED MEDIA"

Picture

On the first Tuesday in August (19), Mixed Media artists had a go at mono printing using a Gelli Plate (commercial or home made) with acrylic paints.  For some of us, it was our first time using this technique and we enjoyed the activity and the surprising results of our endeavours.
Next month, on September 4th, we will use some of these prints as backgrounds for drawing and mark making with a variety of media and tools. We may even have a go at making our own brushes!

A Bit of Collage

Picture
The group gathered once again in April (2018), this time to explore the use of 'collage' techniques. This involved using pieces cut out from magazines, which were then applied to form an  image or used perhaps to develop old painted and drawn art works. Some collage work attempted to render an existing or premeditated image, while other compositions were creatively improvised. Out of this came some striking and highly varied figurative pieces.

'Mixed Media' workshops are planned as a 'First Tuesday of the Month' activity.

"Thanks" to Meredith for helping some of us to add another string to our bow, a most interesting and fun experience.
