Erin and Colleen pictured following presentation of Grant Confirmation at the Playford City Council Mayoral Chambers. The grant enables an Arts North Community Demo/Workshops project.
Particular thanks to the Playford Council. Check the button below for (some) workshop/demo detail. It is always lovely to hear from (new) members: "1st oil painting
1st ever Street / building scene Not an accredited or professional artist Can't wait to learn more Only ever really painted ‘crafty’ stuff in acrylics Enjoying the challenge and love everyone at Judd house! All very helpful and they give lots of confidence boosters" - Anita. Great to see, Anita. And great to hear. 'Thank you' - and keep up the good work. As the crowd rolled in to Fremont Park to the sound of the Elizabeth Pipe Band, Colin had the pleasure and challenge of doing the first portrait of the day. As the crowd built up, before long Colin, Sue and Erin were all working hard to meet every portrait request the stall was being bombarded with. The displayed artwork and Meredith's donated home grown apricots were enticing people closer while Meredith and Alex chatted to visitors out front. With a constant demand for portraits, Don and Graham did the last couple of hours 'shift' and when the Event MC announced closing time, there were still people (very) determined to get their portrait drawn. Doubtless, some of the sitters may have hoped for more polished outcomes (everyone appeared reasonably pleased; most seemed particularly pleased.) The day was, regardless, a great opportunity to support the community, while promoting Arts North at the same time. ... And it was fun! A warm but pleasant (Adelaide) evening for a Barbie (Wednesday 12 Dec). Prawns (lobster?) seemed to be in short supply but anyone who went short of a sausage either wasn't trying or needs to chat about self assertion. Great salads and savories, as always. Lovely to see (Eliz Art Soc founding member) Frank Boyle's wife and son (Sheila and Simon). Name tags were all the go (for about 5 mins - not designed for 'pleasant' Adelaide BBQ temperatures.) But, the possibility of being 'named' kept everybody on their best behavior (and, seemingly, in the chair originally occupied?) Apart from Meredith's President's welcome, the highlight (beyond the tucker and the company) was probably Meredith's invitation for people to actually go around and look at the works assembled on the walls. Thanks to all who contributed. And, of course, thank you to the Committee who have given their time, not just to a BBQ, but to another successful year for Arts North. Merry Christmas!! After a quiet and grey start to the day, the crowds began moving in, the sun came out, and some young takers from the crowd joined the rear table of the Arts North stall to sample some drawing and painting activities. Sue put her charcoal portrait of Colin on an easel at the front of the stall and a family of five enquired if they could have their portraits done. Thinking quickly on their feet Colin and Sue courageously obliged and brought smiles with their efforts. This quickly brought other interested families. By midday the stall was buzzing away with a back table full of visitors, and crowd-portrait practice and Graham's clay animation in the front. Thanks to Meredith for organising to have the stall, and thanks to Colin, Glynis and Sue for setting up, and to everyone else who helped out. - Alex - The 'Kapunda Mob' really out-did themselves in putting the Arts North 'Northern Visions' exhibition on - beautifully curated; professionally presented and promoted; and marvellously catered for (how else with country cooks?). Thanks to all. The Kapunda Gallery walls presented our works to great advantage, with flower arrangement included. There was a good turn out and a sale was notched up by Bill Truslove ?before the doors opened? or ?the dust had a chance to settle? (No dust in Kapunda !! - but Gerhard's painting above does bring to mind country life and 'cricket in the dust'.) (I note that if you want to book an exhibition at Kapunda Gallery, no good planning it on your 2019 calendar - booked out!. Congratulations Kapunda Gallery!) And a pleasing postscript .. I believe Hans Koppan sold two of his exhibited landscapes in the course of the exhibition. Good stuff, Hans! You would be hard pressed to find a more welcoming man than Bill Truslove, who comes with a generosity to match. His byword? "Don't blend (with your fingers) - keep it 'fresh'." Bill had us attempt two 'paintings' over the one-day workshop; the first of a seaside bay; the second of a stylised 'Uluru/Olgas' type. The happy group got to it and by lunch the 'seaside' had as many variations as there were people. Bill said the afternoon subject was 'simple'. It must have been, because everybody had packed up by the time your correspondent (Jimmy Olsen, Cub-reporter, 'Daily Planet'?) looked up. Confused, Jimmy forgot to take more photos. (Bravely, Jimmy includes the only effort avail as we go to press!) Bill, please accept the thanks of all for your excellent help. Your membership at Arts North will certainly help 'promotion' generally.
Diptychs have been available for ever: more available of recent years perhaps ... perhaps that is because they intrigue ... ?
While neither scored a 'gong' at the John Harvey exhibition, these two diptychs hung together were a decided 'focal element' in the exhibition. Credits to Alex Toyne (top) and Hans Koppan (bottom). |
